BUFFALO CITY URGES CITIZENS TO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WATER CONSUPMTION AS PART OF WATER WEEK
As the Country continues to commemorate the National Water Week, the Buffalo City Metro is making a call to its citizens to prioritize the issue of water usage.

The Municipality is currently implementing stage 3 of water restrictions due to drought and these carry punitive tariffs which have had a direct impact on account holders.
The country is commemorating water week under the theme “Valuing Water” in line with World Water Day on March 22. During this period, focus is on public attention on the importance of water, one of South Africa's most limited resources.
The Municipality will embark on a Water Week Awareness Campaign from the 23-31 March 2021 visiting taxi ranks, malls, schools and communities (See program below).
Currently, 98 percent of the residents of our Municipality have access to water.
The low level of dams in Buffalo City has had a direct impact on consumers’ pockets with Council implementing Stages 1 and 2 water restrictions and punitive tarrifs as early as November 2019, as a measure for customers to reduce their water consumption
Unfortunately, there has been no behavior in how residents’ spare water, leading to stage 3 water restrictions coming into effect as at 01 January 2021.
This means that any water consumption in excess of 20kl in a 30-day period becomes much more expensive and consumers are therefore urged to reduce their consumption to within 20kl.
A percentage breakdown of registered billing queries per region as at January 2021 reflects that the majority of enquiries are water related, 77 %.
The Municipality is calling on residents to strongly adhere to general water saving tips, report water leaks and follow water restrictions guidelines.
BCM Water Week campaign is aimed at educating the public about their responsibility in water conservation initiatives, raising awareness around the need to protect and conserve the country’s water resources.
During this period Water Awareness ambassadors will be dispatched in certain areas of the City conducting water awareness and educational programmes.
During the identified period, there will be high visibility of water ambassadors at the following private and public amenities, where most of this information will be made available.
Residents are urged to visit these areas to learn more as follows:
