The project which began in 2019 is broken up into five zones, the first phase began with the constructing of sidewalks where sidewalk section 1,2 and 3 were completed.
Acting Head of Department for Infrastructure Services Luyanda Mbula said, “Since June 2019 the City appointed contractors every financial year to complete sections of sidewalks along Toyana Road, a total of 12 contractors have been used up to date.”
This project saw 12 SMME’s benefitting in terms of job creation and a total of 121 local labourers employed.
Addressing the residents of ward 14 today Mayor Faku said: "Today is a wonderful day in the City as we can all see that Mdantsane is beautiful and this ward has tar roads all over, our children are able to go to school and walk safely and freely in such pavements."
"Since our time being in office we have made a big difference in this ward."
She also thanked her infrastructure department for the work that they have done in making sure that the cries of the residents are heard, we truly are a City hard at work.
“What you are seeing here today is also a true reflection of cries not falling onto deaf ears, the residents of this ward raised the issue of this road and today we are delivering that,” added Faku.
She also urged contractors to be quick in terms of turn around time on the completion of projects.
Mbula said that, a total of R39 732 490.02 has been spent to date as part of the project.
He further highlighted that a projected additional 14 local labourers will be employed during the construction of zone 1 and 3 as well as two additional SMME’s.
The sod turning happened on Wednesday 13 March 2024 in NU 3.
