FALLEN FIRE FIGHTERS RECOGNISED
On Wednesday, 4 May 2022, Buffalo City Metro Fire and Emergency Services Unit conducted an International Firefighters Day to honour the sacrifices of Firefighters in the City.

The International Firefighters Day is celebrated every year on May 4th to recognise and honour the sacrifices of firefighters who risk their lives for others.

International Firefighters Day was established in 1999, to honour the lives of five firefighters who died in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia and to recognize the service as well as sacrifice that firefighters around the world make daily. 
To date, a total of 39 deaths has been confirmed by the Buffalo City Metro Fire Department. 4 Fire men died on duty and 35 firefighters died off duty.
Speaking about the event BCM Chief Fire Officer Thembile Thompson said, "The main purpose of the event is to show our support and appreciation to the firefighters worldwide who protects us so well throughout the year."

"And also to remember the past firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all," said Thompson.
