CITY STRENGTHENS EFFORTS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE
The Directorate of Solid Waste and Environmental Management visited two schools, Sinikiwe High School in Mdantsane and St Thomas Special school in Qonce to create awareness on sustainable environmental management and plant a total of 10 trees.

The schools were educated on the importance of responsible management of waste and on the value of trees in the fight against climate change.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mazulwandile Maphuma, said, "By planting indigenous trees, safeguarding our forests, and encouraging environmental sustainability we help preserve the health of our world and guarantee that our heritage of freedom endures for years to come."

Maphuma went on to say that trees are essential to the ecosystem as they purify the air by filtering harmful substances, assist manage climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, prevent soil erosion, maintain water cycles, enhance agricultural output, and provide habitat for a variety of wildlife species.

The visit to St. Thomas Special School in Qonce was on 12 September 2024 while

Sinikiwe High School in Mdantsane was visited on 13 September 2024.
