A special Council meeting convened at the East London City Hall on Thursday 26 September 2024 approved the hosting of the games labeling the occasion as a great opportunity for the City to bring in much needed economic boost for businesses across the City.
More than 40 municipalities around the country will take part in the annual event starting from the 7th of October to the 11th of October 2024.
This will see sports fanatics showcasing their talent in action cricket, aerobics, cycling, darts, fishing, golf, long tennis, running, netball, pistol shooting, pool, soccer, table tennis, volleyball, and tug of war.
The games are part of a municipal wellness initiative that encourages teamwork, building relationships, and keeping municipal workers fit and healthy.
With the games happening over a week, the City’s tourism sector is expecting to cash in through economic spin-offs brought about by the hosting of the games in terms of local businesses and the hospitality industry.
“There are many economic benefits to hosting these games. There would be increased tourism spending on accommodation, transport, shopping and visiting of attraction sites including the township economy. Those that are here over five days will be spending and injecting into the local economy. Moreover, this is for the wellness of employees.,” said Municipal spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya.
“We are glad that employees and spectators are focused on something positive. Its also a great opportunity for the Metro to remind everyone why we are a must visit place when it comes to sports tourism”
The Buffalo City Metro is teaming up with various external stakeholders, having set up planning and preparatory teams and is ready to receive its guests.
“Venues for all the sporting codes have been identified. The City is on track. We want to show the community of BCMM and our visitors that the City will maintain its reputation of staging incident free important events.“
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the IMSSA provincial executive committee and the leadership of the Municipality for their overwhelming support. We also want to make a call to all community members to come and enjoy these games,” Ngwenya added.
