METRO HANDS OVER CONTAINER MALL TO INFORMAL TRADERS
BCMM Executive Mayor Xola Pakati handed over a container mall to informal traders to support and accommodate Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs ) and informal sectors within the Metro.

The Metro’s Business Development Unit first rolled out the Informal trader’s infrastructure programme in 2018 in Berlin, Mdantsane, Zwelitsha and Bisho.

Speaking about the initiative Project Manager Khungeka Somnono said, “’Due to the success of the programme, the unit is continuing to implement it in different areas within the City including Scenery Park.
These are all community owned projects whose institutional setup is premised on generating economic value to contribute towards the City’s economic growth.

Delivering his speech during the event, Mayor Xola Pakati said, "The City has invested 3.4 Million in this project for 17 beneficiaries from Scenery Park. This is another initiative by the Municipality to fight unemployment in our City."

The container mall for the 17 beneficiaries that were handed over today consists of the following: cooked food, hair sa-lon, internet café, shoe repairs, art and craft and the printing shop.

One of the beneficiaries Thabo Sabetshu who is a hair salon owner at the new container mall said, "I am so thankful to the Metro, now we have a safe place for our businesses. The City has now taken us from nowhere to somewhere."

The handover took place on Friday 11 March at Scenery Park.
