CELEBRATING THOSE WHO PUT THE CITY ON THE MAP THROUGH SPORT
In adopting the spirit of the late former president Nelson Mandela of using sport as a unifying tool, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in this Mandela month celebrated Buffalo City athletes who put the Metro on the Map.

This event was held at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, 10 July 2024.

The athletes had participated in provincial and national stages in the following sporting codes: Athletics (Comrades), Choral Choir, Cicket, Netball, Rugby and Soccer. 

Giving her formal address, BCM  Executive Mayor Princess Faku said : " Thank you for shining the BCM name high. Some of you here are coming from humble beginnings but today you’ve become heroes and heroines in different sporting codes."

Faku reinforced her gratitude to the athletes saying: "Thanks for being ambassadors of our city, go out there, shine and bring more glory to our city."

She also said that teams who are stuggling need to assisted and supported. 
"We need to support such talent by making sure we back up the teams who are struggling financially," she said. 

The executive mayor also made a special mention of Carlos Academy, Doctors Unlimited  and A Stars FC that are hands on in unearthing the talent the City has in football. 
She also highlighted the rich history of boxing and rugby in Buffalo City and its success. 

"Boxing  has produced best imports of our sports. We have Vuyani Bungu here with us today and Welcome Ncita who were world champions, today they are our ambassadors of this sport.In rugby on the other side, we have produced men and women who've become a part of the springboks."

The Mayor also handedover certificates and appreciation gifts to athletes and clubs. This event was held at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium today.
