New Councillors are required by law to swear or affirm their faithfulness and obedience to the Republic of South Africa, at any time by arrangement before the Speaker and the Law Office of the municipality.
Councillors Dumisani and Lwando officially assumed their roles in Buffalo City, with Dumisani representing Ward 12 and Lwando serving Ward 20. They took their oaths of office before Head of Legal Services Mlamli Zenzile.
Amongst those in attendance were BCMM Councillors, BCMM Executive Mayor Councillor Princess Faku, BCMM Chief Whip Nozandile Mhlola, Councillor Africa Maxongo, City Manager Mxolisi Yawa and ANC Dr WB Rubusana Regional Secretary Antonio Bheki Carels.
Making their declarations of office, Cllr. Dumisani and Cllr. Lwando said: “I swear that I will be faithful to the Republic of South Africa and will obey, respect and uphold the constitution and all other laws of the Republic of South Africa.”
“I solemnly promise to perform my functions and duties as a Councillor of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality to the best of my ability. So, help me God.”
The Speaker extended a warm welcome to the newly sworn-in councillors, expressing best wishes for their tenure serving Buffalo City's residents with integrity, honour and commitment to upholding their oath of office.
Councillor Dumisani and Councillor Lwando have filled the seats left vacant by the late Councillors, Aphiwe Gwabe and Andile Phetani who recently passed away.
The swearing in ceremony took place on Friday 18 October 2024 at the East London City Hall.
