The purpose of the meeting was to workshop the Metropolitan Geographic Names Committee on the processes of standardisation of geographical names change in Buffalo City.
Standartisation of geographical name change refers to the correct usage and application of geographical names. Opening the session, Speaker of Council Cllr Humphrey Maxegwana said the process is a symbol of further democratising our country.
He said the names must mean something to the community and to "ensure our African identity is recognised." Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr Malibongwe Mfazwe said:" This is indeed a momentous occasion for all of us as we gather here for the inaugural meeting of the Metropolitan Geographic Names Committee. In our midst, we are fortunate to have representatives from the Provincial Geographical Names Committee (PGNC) who are guiding us in this transformative journey here in our province.
He said, "The importance of this work cannot be overstated. Geographical names hold deep cultural, historical, and emotional significance for communities. I have no doubt that, with integrity and dedication, this committee will make a meaningful contribution to this process."
