Speaking at the oversight visits, HOD for Solid Waste and Environmental Management Yoliswa Sinyanya said, "The aim of this tour is to give an opportunity to the directorate’s committee and the public to have an oversight on the projects that have been implemented during the 2023/2024 financial year."
Welcoming guests Councillor Whittington said, "The work that this directorate is doing is commendable because these projects help by ensuring that the directorate renders an effective and efficient service to the people of BCMM." She also thanked the City officials for working tirelessly to keep the Metro clean and safe.
The General Manager for Solid Waste Management Services, Nomphelo Daniel took the group for a walkabout around all projects undertaken in the landfill. Daniel also explained that in order to ensure that the waste that is disposed off is reduced, the department is promoting sustainability in communities by hosting clean-up campaigns, education and awareness drives on waste handling and recycling.
The second stop was the newly established Garden Refuse Transfer Station in Mdantsane NU7 for management of garden waste and builder’s rubble.
The last stop of the day was the Gonubie Main Beach where a successful partnership between BCM and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) bore successful results of installing Beach mats in order to enhance a greater participation in this region, attract persons living with disabilities particularly wheelchair-users, strollers and to further promote universal full-beach accessibility in the City.
