Kaiser’s Beach
The Kaiser’s Beach remains closed as a measure to ensure the safety and wellbeing of beach-goers as the whale carcas that washed up last month continues to decompose.
Community members are warned not to swim or come close to the dead whale.
Eastern Beach
The Eastern Beach, where a dead whale was discovered nearby yesterday morning, remains closed.
Although the whale is located some distance from the shoreline, floating meat and it's remains may attract sharks closer to shore.
Nahoon Beach
Following a shark sighting yesterday afternoon, the Nahoon Beach has also been closed as a precautionary.
The situation is being evaluated based on the movements of the whale carcas and the animals that are feeding off the meat chunks.
Photographs/ Videos
The photograph and videos currently being shared are that of the dead stationary whale. No images of sharks are available.
Shark sighting
A shark sighting is a visual confirmation of a shark in the water by a public safety official or sighting by multiple people.
What are the signs that a shark is nearby
Circling birds, splashing water, a dead whale, feeding seals and dolphins may indicate a shark is near.
What are dead whales used for
The nutrients from their bodies provide an important food source to animals including crabs, mammals and birds, which come from a wide area just to feed on a whale carcass.
Why is it dangerous to touch a dead whale?
A whale has a lot of blubber! Approaching a carcas means carefully navigating slippery and sometimes bloody terrain. One must be careful, since the blood can be contaminated. Additionally, gas bubbles can sometimes form on the body and rupture without warning.
