The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints responded to the call made by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Executive Mayor Princess Faku to all non-governmental organisations and individuals within the Metro to help with flood disaster relief by making this generous donation.
Approximately 3,000 families have been affected by the heavy rains across several municipal wards.
Speaking at the handover, the executive mayor said: “We had to make a call for flood disaster relief, appealing to the BCMM community at large to open their hearts and help those in need.”
“We requested business fraternity, key stakeholders and religious community and other sectors to come forward to donate, and we are happy with the swift response we have been receiving from different organizations,” she said.
Faku thanked the church on behalf of the provincial government, the municipality and council. “We also thank all those who have made this day possible and to other stakeholders who have or are planning to come forward to help us feed and clothe these families.”
“The anticipated rain is increasing the risk of further damage and displacement, but the Metro is trying to plan better as they move forward, and it has teams working around the clock in making sure that people are safe,” she added.
The Metro is still making a call to citizens to play their part as well. There is a significant requirement for response from non-governmental organizations and other organizations to come help and provide the assistance that is needed in these communities.
