Welcome late Christmas

03 February 2012

EVEN though Christmas came somewhat late for the elderly people of Amalinda, the day was filled with joy and laughter.

On Thursday, 2 February, Executive Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha shared a meal with the residents of the Silver Crown Old Age Home in Amalinda. Speaking to them Ncitha said that the lunch was meant to have been held in December last year "but because of unforeseen circumstances we couldn't make it".

"Today we are here to seek advice from you on various areas that the City may need to look into." It was also sharing the day to celebrate the lives of elderly people who always shared wise words with younger folk.

Mary Mashuana, the centre manager, said the elderly were grateful for this opportunity to share lunch with the mayor. "We have longed for this day for so many years but today our wishes have been granted."

Speaking about the event, the manager of special programmes, Shaun Petzer, said: "The initiative sought to bring smiles and a message of hope to vulnerable groups, including the elderly.

"This commitment is born out of recognition for the plight of vulnerable groups and often marginalised groups and the desire to spread some good cheer over the festive season."

In addition to lunch, each person received a goody bag containing a knee rug, toiletries and biscuits. The mayor emphasised that the items were for the use of the elderly. "These gifts are only meant for you and I would like to urge you not to give them to your grandchildren. They are meant for you to use them."

And 69-year-old Mthunzi Telewu said: "I'll be warm this winter, thanks to Buffalo City's gift of blankets."

The gift would come in handy since "we are approaching the cold season".

Mashuana added that the visit was confirmation that the metro cared about and respected its senior citizens. "We can see that you love and respect old people and from that you will be blessed and prosper in servicing the residents of Buffalo City."
