EVERYONE is being called to take part in Buffalo City's 10-day countdown to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, with celebrations happening at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium on Sunday, 30 May.
The party will begin with a street parade from 11am on the Esplanade at the beachfront, continuing on to the cricket stadium later in the afternoon, where revellers will be treated to music.
Performing artists will include the Jaziel Brothers, JR, Brian Temba and Tear Gas. Local artists will be featured; there will be arts and craft stalls and a children's corner. Entrance to the event is free.
According to a municipal report, Buffalo City will literally come alight later on in the evening, when there will be a fireworks display.
The party is an element in the City's plan to encourage to its residents to be part of the tournament celebrations. The World Cup will happen at various stadiums around the country, including in Buffalo City's neighbouring city, Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan.
It kicks off on 11 June and runs until 11 July.
And Buffalo City is setting up public viewing areas for its residents who can't make it to the games in the host cities. They will be at the Victoria Grounds Stadium in King William's Town, Douw Sports Ground in Tsholomnqa and Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.
There will be a big screen where the matches will be broadcast at each public viewing area, as well as food and beverage stalls and entertainment. The City has already started its World Cup mania with employee Football Friday Fun Events which are aimed at encouraging staff to support Bafana Bafana.
City staff members are encouraged to spread the word to the public and to embrace their love for the game. Activities planned include a Diski Dance competition, a vuvuzela-blowing competition and a football quiz.
