Support written in stone

24 May 2010

BUFFALO City's Inland Region is feeling the spirit of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, and has put two messages in stone along the N2 near King William's Town.

The two topographical features' messages include "2010 FEEL IT" and "2010 IT'S HERE". They are part of the City's efforts to show its support for the tournament, and to encourage its residents to support it as well.

These features are slopes at Breidbach and Tshatshu, respectively, and the messages can be seen on either side of the N2 just outside King William's Town, going towards East London.

In implementing the plan, the City's general manager for the Inland Region, Wongezile Goba, approached employees to volunteer their skills.

Goba said the initiative was mainly driven by a wish to make a contribution towards the success of the country's hosting of the games and to the municipality's efforts to support them.

"I wish to thank all those who so far have made a contribution and will present these contributions to the region's Football Friday Fun Events and announce to the crowd who the volunteers are."

The initiative was reinforced by ideas which bore no costs or fewer costs for the municipality. The volunteers used stones and rocks and were guided on where and how to set them up.

They were installed in a manner that would capture the public mood and "strengthen their interest in the winter tournament for the public to really feel the vibe and spread the word that it is really here".

The World Cup football tournament takes place at various stadiums around the country, including in Buffalo City's neighbour, the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan. It begins on 11 June and ends on 11 July.
