WORLD Cup spirit is at its peak in Buffalo City, where people can watch the games at the three public viewing areas (PVAs), opened when the tournament began on Friday, 11 June.
The viewing areas were full to capacity during the Bafana Bafana and Mexico game, with entertainment over and above the match ranging from local to national artists. One of the PVAs, at Douw Stadium, was targeted at giving Tsholomnqa Villages the opportunity to feel the spirit.
Here music was from Theo of Mafikizolo, gospel singer Veliswa Skeyi and local acts. Speaking at the event, Executive Mayor Zukisa Faku said: "As Buffalo City we are behind our national team and we are so grateful to have the World Cup in our country to show visitors our beautiful country and the spirit of togetherness."
She was excited to see visitors adapting to vuvuzelas and using them to celebrate goals at the stadiums.
The PVAs are at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, Victoria Grounds in King William's Town and Douw Stadium in Tsholomnqa. All Bafana Bafana games will be screened, as will the other games, including the semifinals and the final.
They are set to give residents of Buffalo City a chance to experience the World Cup in a stadium environment.
Entertainment in the city began on 30 May, 10 days before the World Cup opening ceremony, with a street parade at the beachfront. It ended at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium, where there was music and children's entertainment.
Then, earlier this month, Buffalo City showed its support for the World Cup by hanging the flags of all 64 participating countries in Alexandra Street in King William's Town and Oxford Street in East London.
These streets are also decorated with wire figures of soccer players, while along the N2 between King William's Town to East London, coloured stones read "2010 FEEL IT" and "2010 IT'S HERE".
All stadiums and viewing areas will be open two hours before each game kicks off.
