Catch the World Cup vibe

1 July 2010

OUR national team Bafana Bafana may be out of the World Cup, but this has not dampened the spirits of football fans in Buffalo City, where the hype is still high.

There are three public viewing areas in Buffalo City – at Victoria Grounds in King William’s Town, at Douw Stadium in Tsholomnqa and at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane – where people can experience the World Cup in a stadium environment, without having to have tickets to the game.

Initially opened for people to watch the Bafana games, they were used to screen the semifinals, and will show the quarterfinals and the final.

World Cup entertainment in the city began on 30 May, 10 days before the opening ceremony, with a street parade at the beachfront, a concert at Buffalo Park Stadium and children's entertainment.

The vibe continued with local and national artists performing at various stadiums on Friday, 11 June – opening day – at all the public viewing areas. The East London Museum on Oxford Street also opened a soccer exhibition in late May.

A multimedia exhibition called Laduma, it is based on the 2010 World Cup. It is also regarded as a tribute to national and local soccer legends.

The exhibition, in the museum’s lobby, was put together by the museum team with funds from the National Lottery. It has information on soccer history, a large section with soccer memorabilia, including signed jerseys, medals and trophies either loaned or donated to the museum by local soccer teams and players.

At least R600 000 was spent on the exhibition, which included buying a vehicle to take the show to rural areas.
