THE Ann Bryant Art Gallery in Southernwood, East London, begins the year on a high note with various art exhibitions and competitions creating colour at the venue.
Included in the calendar is the Absa Atelier competition, mosaic challenge, video series and a Spier Contemporary local exhibition. Opening the year is the Spier Contemporary Artists-in-Residence exhibition, in which various local artists will showcase their talent.
Dinisile Qapa, Ndileka Gongxeka, Loyiso Nabe and Leka Gaji are among those artists with works in the exhibition.
The Artist-in-Residence programme is a partnership between the University of Fort Hare and the Africa Centre which is intended to provide emerging and mid-career artists living and working in and around Eastern Cape with a space to work, allowing them to deepen and broaden their artistic practice.
The selection of participating artists is based on the quality or potential of their work, their interest in working within the programme and for whom appointments as resident artists may make a significant difference to their careers.
The exhibition opens on Friday, 15 January and ends on 29 January.
On Saturday, 23 January, the Ann Bryant Mosaic Challenge takes place outside the Coach House. According to a press release issued by the gallery, the challenge is a chance for artists to leave a legacy for visitors to enjoy.
Artists will be required to mosaic a flower pot, which will be displayed within the gallery grounds. People are advised to bring along their picnic baskets, but all materials will be provided by the gallery.
On the same day, Friends of the Ann Bryant Art Gallery will continue with its DVD series, kicking off with a video by Diego Velazquez entitled The Private Life of a Masterpiece.
It recounts the history of individual paintings in classy, uncluttered absorbing ways. The video was sourced from the BBC, Britain’s national broadcaster.
The show starts at 1pm, and there will be refreshments after the video.
Then there is the Young Emerging Artists Art Competition, which is organised by the gallery. Submissions for this competition close on Friday, 29 January.
All emerging artists have been urged to submit their works at the gallery. There will be an exhibition of the winning works at the Coach House. Artists must be between the ages of 21 and 35 years to participate.
Also on the cards in the new year is the 2010 Absa Atelier competition. The annual competition is held for artists between the ages of 21 and 35. Registration forms and information is available during gallery opening hours or at any Absa Bank branch.
Young artists can enter the competition between 1 and 5 March.
The Ann Bryant Art Gallery is at 9 St Mark’s Road in Southernwood, in East London. It is open on Mondays to Fridays, from 9am to 5pm; and on Saturdays and public holidays, from 9am to 12 noon.
