Exhibitions keep the
cold at bay

13 May 2009

WARM up your winter days with a jam-packed line-up at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, where there are activities ranging from artworks in the garden to solo exhibitions to an antiques auction.

Friends of the Ann Bryant Art Gallery have a collection of documentaries on artists both local and international, which include art and architecture of various places of interest worldwide.

The videos can be viewed everyday at the gallery’s Coach House, upstairs. To arrange a viewing, contact Bev Samler on 082 749 5878.

Andrew Sannan’s South African Wild Coast exhibition opens on Thursday, 21 May and closes on Saturday, 7 June. His works are inspired by the untamed beauty of the Wild Coast.

The paintings are traditional landscapes in oils, although the artist makes use of knife technique for more experimental interpretations, which reflects the spectacular landscapes and wildlife of the country.

In these paintings, Sannan demonstrates the rare ability to convey the reality and spirituality of his subject. He has exhibited his work in a number of cities, including Bloemfontein and Cape Town.

Art in the Garden is on Saturday, 30 May from 9am until 12 noon. All artists and crafters participating have been asked to bring their works for display and selling.

Spier Contemporary 2010
Later in the day, artists will be encouraged to attend a meeting for the Spier Contemporary 2010 competition, with guest speaker Mathew Skade-Nondlwana.

The Spier Contemporary 2010 has called on all artists living in South Africa to begin thinking about how they would like to reflect their experiences, aspirations and visions through new work submitted to this competition/exhibition.

It will provide an extraordinary opportunity to showcase artists who work in diverse media from a broad range of cultural contexts. Winners will receive awards, curatorial training, visual art and performing art workshops.

The Spier Contemporary 2010 exhibition will open in March 2010 in Cape Town, moving to Johannesburg and Durban later in the year.

Evaluations Also at the Ann Bryant, Strauss & Co, a fine art auction company, will present and evaluate antiques with the possibility of selling them. The auction will be held on Monday, 18 May, from 9am until 3pm.

The public is asked to bring paintings, furniture, silver and ceramics for evaluation; an evaluation fee of R15 per item will be charged.

In addition, a monthly national art newspaper is available at the gallery free of charge. The Ann Bryant Art Gallery is at 9 St Mark’s Road in Southernwood. It is open on Mondays to Fridays, from 9am to 5pm; and on Saturdays and public holidays, from 9am to 12 noon.

The gallery is closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Freedom Day, Workers’ Day and Youth Day. For more information, telephone the gallery on 043 722 4044, or send an email to annbryant@intekom.co.za.
