Plenty to do at Bryant Gallery

13 July 2009

The Ann Bryant Gallery has a full calendar this month, including an art talk by Barry Gibb, an art open day and a film series. There is also a sculpting competition running until September.

Love is the Devil
This is an illustrated introductory talk on the work of British artist Francis Bacon, presented by Barry Gibb. It is based on the film The Love of Affair of Francis Bacon – Britain’s Greatest Modern Painter.

The talk will explore some of Bacon’s works, and will include snippets of an interview with this artist. The show will note the remarkable resemblance in voice and appearance of Derek Jacobi and the real Bacon.

Love is the Devil takes place on Thursday, 16 July at 7pm; entrance is R25 per person.

Art Open Day
Artists and crafters, both established and up-coming, have been urged to bring their paints and easels to join a day of painting in the garden. Participants have also been asked to bring their works for display and selling.

Coffee, tea and muffins will be on sale. The Art Open Day is on Saturday, 25 July from 9am to noon.

The gallery is also hosting a competition for young artists, the PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards Competition. An annual competition, it gives young artists the opportunity to explore their talent through the affordable and versatile medium of concrete.

According to a media statement issued by the gallery, the competition has committed itself to enhancing South Africa’s arts, culture and heritage for the benefit of future generations. “Artists young in the art of sculpting are also assured of recognition for their artistic contributions.”

The total prize money is R85 000, with the first prize R50 000; the runner up will receive R25 000, with two merit awards worth R5 000 each – each will be awarded “to artists who have demonstrated their skills and ability to create a sculpture using cement”.

The competition is open to students and people with formal training as well as those with no training in sculpting who have recently become acquainted with concrete as a medium and are 18 years and older.

Entry forms are to be collected at the gallery and submitted before Tuesday, 30 September.

Documentaries
The Friends of the Ann Bryant Art Gallery has a collection of documentaries on artists both local and international, which include art and architecture of various places of interest worldwide.

This is the second documentary series of the year and is presented by Nigel Spivey. The videos can be viewed every Wednesday from 1pm to 2pm at the gallery’s Coach House.

The Ann Bryant Art Gallery is at 9 St Mark’s Road in Southernwood. It is open on Mondays to Fridays, from 9am to 5pm; and on Saturdays and public holidays, from 9am to 12 noon.

The gallery is closed on Good Friday, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Freedom Day, Workers’ Day and Youth Day. For more information, telephone the gallery on 043 722 4044, or send an email to annbryant@intekom.co.za
