Music and dance warm up Guild

By Tabisa Mntengwana

DRAMA, intrigue, laughter and music will warm up the nights through the tail end of winter.

The line up at East London’s Guild Theatre is diverse, with the ever-popular Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist, a tribute to Pink Floyd, a ballet presented by the Joanna Wright School of Ballet, music and finally dancing by the Russian State Kuban Dance Company.

Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist has a nightly show at 7pm, from 4 to 8 August. And the Guild has warned people to be prepared for a high voltage, very funny hypnosis show. Andre is wittier than ever and the show promises a riot of laughter.

A week later it’s the turn of the Pink Floyd Tribute, on 14 and 15 August. The show will feature Centrestage, doing covers of the famous epics by British rock band Pink Floyd. Listen out for Dogs, A Great Day for Freedom, A Pillow of Wind and Breathe. The show starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available at the theatre’s box office at R119 each.

After music it is time to shed a tear with The Snow Queen ballet, presented by the Joanna Wright School of Ballet.

Based on the original Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, it tells of the heartless Snow Queen and her magic mirror. The mirror reduces the good and magnifies the bad in all who look in it. It shatters one day and is spread by the wind to the hearts and souls of the nearby villagers.

The cast of 100 performers depict the story of Gerda and Kay who find their friendship torn apart as a shard of the mirror enters Kay’s eye and the jealous Snow Queen takes him way to her palace.

A full-length ballet, it is created, directed and choreographed by Wright. Tickets are available at the theatre’s ticket box at R40 for students and R50 for adults.

The Snow Queen ballet is on from 27 to 29 August.

Next up, on Monday, 31 August at pm, The Rockets, are recording a live DVD.

One of the oldest gigging bands in the country, it has performed in many Europeans countries. One of their hit songs is Loving You.

Tickets for the show and recording are R100 per person at the theatre’s ticket box.

And finally, for something completely different, there is Cossack dancing from the Russian State Kuban Dance Company. With their choir, the dancers will offer a glimpse of the colourful, multi-layered history of Russia in song, music and dance.

Using spectacular costumes and expressive style to enchant the audience, the show is on for two days only, on 10 and 11 September.

Tickets cost from R135 to R225 per person.
