BUFFALO City's executive mayor Sakhumzi Caga wishes the people of the City a happy and prosperous 2009.
"The New Year gives us an opportunity as a municipality to reflect, evaluate and improve in areas that pose challenges. This we will undertake, while raising the bar in those that we master."
He added that the City applauded all those who had gone beyond the call of duty and urged them to even go further in 2009.
"We are encouraged by members of the public who have taken pride in their City by coming on board to voluntarily assist us when we were confronted with challenges that hinder service delivery.
"The monstrous waves that battered our shores in September and the patriotism displayed by those who met us halfway is exemplary. We hope that this will inspire our people elsewhere."
In an effort to kick off the year positively and bring relief to the thousands of consumers on prepaid electricity, the City had unblocked all those in the system. Between 19 December 2008 and 4 January 2009, no new electrical blockings were implemented and electricity not exceeding R500 was freely purchasable.
Service delivery
"Our core agenda is that of service delivery and our profound vision explicitly attests to this. As we enter the New Year it is befitting to reflect on the sterling work and achievements that we have accomplished," the mayor added.
"It's been a historic year for the country, our proud municipality and service delivery in particular."
Caga mentioned the Vuna Award that the municipality won in November last year, describing it as "testimony to the hard work of thousands of men and women (visibly and invisibly) donning the badge of our City throughout villages, suburbs and townships".
He urged everyone to "carry on with the commitment and dedication we have displayed in the last 12 months. As individuals we can do so much, as a collective we can achieve greatness."
The City urged members of the public to co-operate with its law enforcement officials who had been deployed all over to ensure safety during this demanding and exciting period.
