BUFFALO City is offering its debtors until 28 February to settle their accounts thanks to a new payment scheme.
The arrangement is valid for debtors who have been handed over to attorneys or debt collectors. “We will not turn away debtors who haven’t been handed over yet. The City will also assist everyone but our priority is those who have been handed over,” said Leon van Wyk, the City’s debt and administration manager.
According to a notice issued by the finance department, this is part of reducing unnecessary money spent by the municipality on legal costs, which could be used in the development of City. “The money spent in legal fees could also be spent in settlement of the debts.”
The notice also stipulates the conditions of the settlement arrangement which requires the debtor to settle at least 50 percent of the total debt owed to the municipality. “Once the payment has been made, the debt with the attorney and debt collectors will be withdrawn,” reads the notice.
According to the municipal credit control policy after the payment has been made, a final arrangement may be entered into to settle the remainder of the debt in equal installments. Debtors will also continue with their current monthly payments.
“Debtors are encouraged to take this opportunity and settle their debts using this arrangement as this will not only benefit the City but also its clients,” said Van Wyk.
All debtors should consult their nearest Municipal Finance Offices in the Buffalo City area.
The window period is valid until 28 February this year.
