Street closures
over New Year

TRAFFIC and crowd management plans will once again be implemented in respect of beaches in Buffalo City with major street closures and diversions of traffic particular in the Eastern Beach and Esplanade areas with road closures being effected on 31 December 2009 with the road closures continuing for as long as is required.

Total road closures will occur in the Quigney in respect of the area to the south of Fitzpatrick Road and the area to the west of Fleet Street.

Access to this area will be by permit only with access points at Tennyson Street, Caxton Street, Aquarium Road and Inverleith Terrace in respect of access to Inverleith Terrace only. Access to these areas is limited to residents, including guests at accommodation establishments only.

Quigney Residents can also gain access by using their water and lights account.

Public parking will be at the Old Caravan Park, Buffalo Park Drive and Marina Glen. Access to these areas will be via Buffalo Park Drive and does not require a permit i.e. free access until all available parking is used up.

As a result of parking in close proximity to the beach area no permits will be issued to day visitors/beach goers.

Residents and businesses within the closed off area will have permits issued to their residences or business. No permits will be issued to individuals at the Traffic Services.

Other affected areas are Bonza Bay area in Beacon Bay and Kidds Beach where vehicular entrance will be for residents only and by production of a permit.

Beach goers are warned against the discharge of fireworks and the drinking of alcohol in public. Motorists are also warned against the illegal stopping and or parking of vehicles especially across vehicle entrances, such vehicles will be towed away.

Parents are advised to ensure that their children are looked after at all time.

 Beach Control

  • Marshalls are hired to control Beach parking in the aid of controlled access and parking for all. This allows clear access if emergencies arise.
    The fee is R5 per vehicle and the public will be given a number BCM ticket
  • No go areas for vehicles from 31 Dec until 2 January 09 will be Gonubie, Bonza andNahoon Beach parking areas.
Public Behaviour and safety:
  • To swim safely on our beaches always swim on a public beach where lifesavers are available
  • Lifeguards are on duty from 07h00 to 18h00 at all swimming beaches, with additional lifeguards from 13th Dec to 3rd January 09
  • Swim between the lifesaving flags
  • Do not swim alone in isolated areas
  • Do not cross Rivers especially after heavy rain.
  • Do not swim if you have been drinking alcohol.
  • Do not swim after dark
Our BCM Disaster Management Unit, Law Enforcement, Traffic and Fire Services will be working together with the South African Police Services, Provincial Department of Transport and Provincial Social Development on these operations.
