HUNDREDS of people - both walkers and runners - participated in this year’s train race from Fort Jackson to Highgate station over the weekend.
The annual Metrorail Man versus Machine race was held on Saturday, 11 October - and more than 400 athletes took part. “We are celebrating our fifth year and we intend to improve the standards of the race each year,” said Metrorail’s regional manager, Claudia Williams.
“People associate trains with danger, crime and being unsafe but with occasions like these we want people to know that trains are a better option for travelling and we encourage our commuters to be responsible.”
The 20km race attracted participants from around the Eastern Cape, with runners coming from Lusikisiki, Port Elizabeth and Butterworth, among other towns. “Most people are aware that rail is fun, safe and cheap compared to other modes of transport.”
Every year Metrorail invites welfare organisations, schools, corporates, athletic organisations and non-governmental organisations to take part. “Most of the runners today have been part of the race since its inception and they always look forward to being part of this initiative,” Williams said.
Metrorail’s marketing and communications manager, Mamnkeli Ngam, said, “This event is also set to encourage youngsters to participate in local events and be part of community activities.”
But it was not only about the race; jumping castles and face painting kept children entertained. “I am having so much fun I’m coming again next year with my mom,” said Chumani Goba, who was there with his grandmother.
Williams explained that the race was also a family day out, “where [families] can enjoy themselves in a different environment”.
All proceeds from the train race will go to the Nkazimlweni Aids Orphans Centre in Ziphumzana. Participants received prizes after the race, including cash and bags.
