City staff rewarded
for hard work

10 November 2008

THE City again rewarded its staff for hard work, dedication and long service at its second annual Municipal Outstanding Performance Awards.

More than 20 employees received certificates of outstanding performance at the awards ceremony, held at City Hall last week.

Initiated by the Office of the Municipal Manager in 2007, they are made in an effort to reward employees who have excelled at work. The awards also form part of City management’s strategy to motivate staff towards excellence and retaining human resources.

Welcoming people to the event, the acting municipal manager, Vuyani Lwana, said that for the City to bring about better service delivery it was important to acknowledge the skills and performance of staff.

Lwana congratulated the staff, saying, “We wish to commend your loyalty, dedication, and faithfulness to the council and those who have served the City for more than 25 years.”

There are various categories of award, including Employee of the Year, Long Service to the City, and Employee of the Month. “This year we have a special Long Service Award for someone who has worked for the municipality for more than 40 years,” he announced.

Nadine Sonneberger, an executive secretary in the Office of the Municipal Manager, has been working for the City for 44 years. “It’s an honour to have received the award and the reason I have stayed this long with the municipality is because it’s a pleasant environment.”

City officials, including the portfolio head for corporate services, Sizwe Dikimolo; and the portfolio head for development and planning, Nomhizana Sityi, attended the event.

The keynote address was made by renowned businesswoman Xoliswa Tini. “The municipality is the engine of city development and I am glad to see that it has taken seriously the importance of good performance in acknowledging its employees,” she said.

City management should continue commending hard work and diligence to boost staff morale. “It is very important for management to praise staff and not forget to capacitate [them] with skills to further uplift their performance.”

Giving words of encouragement and appreciation to those who received Long Service Awards, she said, “This is your opportunity to transfer your skills to young colleagues.”

The municipal Employee for the Year Award was jointly shared by the staff of the electricity department, all of whom worked tirelessly in the fight against illegal electricity connections in Duncan Village.

The day ended with entertainment and refreshments.
