Tariffs and charges to increase

TARIFFS and charges in Buffalo City for the 2008-09 financial year will increase by an average of 11 percent from 1 July.
The increase was accepted by the City council at a meeting at the East London City Hall on Thursday, 29 May, before Executive Mayor Zintle Peter tabled a R3,1-billion budget for the next financial year.
That is a record operating budget of R2-billion and R1,1-billion for capital expenditure.
In her report to the council on Tuesday, 20 May, Peter recommended that service tariffs like sewerage, refuse and water be increased by 11 percent; electricity by 12 percent.
The general rate on land and improvements for residential, industrial, business government and parastals will increase by 11 percent.
At the council meeting these recommendation were approved and will be in effect at the beginning of the 2008-09 financial year.
