THE East London weather had the final say on the first day of the SAA South African Tennis Open, when a storm broke out at midday, putting a stop to the rest of Monday's play.
Earlier, morning showers delayed the scheduled 10am start at the Selborne Tennis Park. However, some tennis was played before the big storm hit. Main streets, like Oxford, were pools of water.
In the four games that were completed on Monday, France's Laurent Recouderc only dropped three games when he beat South Africa's Damian Hume 6-0, 6-3. Sixth seed Frederico Gil, of Portugal, had a tougher game against Slovakia's Ivo Klec, winning 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.
Brazil's Ricardo Melo beat Czech Republic's Pavel Snoble 6-3, 6-2 and in the last game of the day eighth seed Stefano Galvani from Italy beat Germany's Bjorn Phau 6-3, 6-3.
This morning, the international players again woke up to morning showers that threaten to delay today's tennis. If the weather holds up, however, the top seeds will be in action this afternoon.
Number one seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia takes on Algeria's Lamine Ouahab and South Africa's Wesley Moodie takes on Spain's Adrian Menendez. Play was scheduled to start at 10am, but was expected to begin at 11.30am because of rain.
