CHRISTMAS is a time for giving, and in this spirit 18 wheelchairs have been donated to disabled people in Mdantsane.
The Mdantsane Urban Renewal Programme (MURP), together with Rotary Club of Bonza Bay and Intengu Communication, identified beneficiaries through the organisation, Disabled People of South Africa.
Addressing the beneficiaries at the hand-over on Thursday, 18 December at the MURP offices, the ward councillor, Melindawo Mhani, said, "I am happy that there are organisations like the Rotary Club that are committed to making the lives of the people of Mdantsane better and to contributing to changing the face of Mdantsane."
It was important for the municipality to keep partnerships like these. "They play a big role in changing the lives of disadvantaged people and in helping the communities to accommodate and embrace physically challenged people."
Christo Theart, a member of Rotary Club, said that the Bonza Bay office had received funds from the club's England office. "Working through programmes like MURP, we as business people try to give back to communities we work with."
The initiative was formed between the two partners, with the aim of improving the lives of the people of Mdantsane. "This is also a way to encourage the community of Mdantsane to take decisions that will enhance their future," said Mhani.
The partnership is also set to ensure service delivery runs smooth.
The day wrapped up with a special thank you from one of the beneficiaries, Nokuthula Tsawu, who said: "Today is a joyous day for us. Receiving these wheelchairs means a lot and will not only change our lives but also those of our families.
"This will take a load off our families, some of whom were struggling. Some of us had to be carried to move around."
According to the MURP office, there are six more wheelchairs that still have to be given to beneficiaries.
