CITY SAYS NO! TO ELECTRICITY VANDALISM
In an effort to educate communities about the dangers of vandalism the Buffalo City Executive Mayor Zintle Peter will be launching an Anti-Vandalism Campaign at the Gompo Sports Grounds on Saturday 31 March 2007 at 10am.
This is part of a broader anti-crime campaign for the entire Buffalo City Municipality. In order for the campaign to be a success the municipality has teamed up with key and relevant stakeholders including the SAPS (Duncan Village), electricity suppliers Eskom, religious leaders, ward councillors and committees and community based organisations.
The campaign also aims to inform and educate communities about the negative effects vandalism has on the revenue collection of the municipality and impacts heavily on service delivery.
In the last nine months more that thirty poles were cut down; and this cost the municipality between R10 000 and R30 000 to replace one electricity poles.
Acts of vandalism also affect businesses around the municipal area; and they include illegal connections, damage to electricity installations and the cutting down of electricity poles.
Some of the most affected areas include Buffalo Flats, Scenary Park, Buffalo River Pump station, Reeston, Pefferville, Duncan Village, Mdantsane and Cambridge.
The anti-vandalism campaign will be rolled throughout the municipal area in collaboration with our partners to ensure the successful prosecution of the perpetrators of electricity vandalism.
The Media, as an important stakeholder, is invited to attend the launch to inform and educate Buffalo City citizens
