Mayor hosts elderly Christmas luncheon

12 December 2007

With the festive season upon us and the spirit of giving permeating throughout city, Executive Mayor, Zintle Peter will make an effort to break the cycle of suffering by hosting her annual Christmas luncheon for the needy elderly of Buffalo City.

Initiated in 2006 in partnership with South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) the luncheon aims to bring a spirit of Christmas cheer and hope for the elderly.

This year Mayor Peter will spend her time sharing words of comfort and goodwill with pensioners from Mdantsane, Dimbaza and East London and suburbs.

To show her commitment to the initiative, Mayor Peter has put together an entertainment filled programme which is bound to put a sparkle in any pensioner’s eye. To take back our pensioners to a bygone era, Mayor Peter has chosen the Slowfoot Dancers as well as a few other reknown entertainers to entertain and enthrall the audience.

Explaining the need to host these luncheons, Mayor Peter said that the elderly needed to feel wanted, cared for and appreciated. "This is just our small gesture to show our elderly that someone out there does care for them.”

In order to ensure that the neediest of elders were reached, ward councillors were deployed to assist the Executive Mayor. About 450 pensioners will benefit from this programme.

Kicking off the programme will be a luncheon at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre on Friday, December 7, followed by Moses Twebe Hall in Dimbaza on December, 9; and with a grand finale at the East London City Hall on December 11, 2007.

Mayor Peter thanked Sassa for their continued support and encouraged them to continue with their kind gesture.
