Mayor announces her mayoral committee

27 March 2006

IN announcing her new 10-member mayoral committee, Buffalo City Mayor Ntombentle (Zintle) Peter focused on continuation, retaining five members of the previous mayoral committee.

However, there are two new portfolios - housing and community. This is seen as a sign that Buffalo City aims to deal with its backlog of 75 000 houses and also to improve its interaction with its citizens.

The retained councillors will serve in different portfolios. John Badenhorst, previously the finance portfolio head, will now serve as the integrated development planning, budget policy and performance management head.

Mhleli Matika, previously with corporate services, will now serve in Badenhorst's previous portfolio, running the City's finances. Corporate services will now be held by Sizwe Dikimolo, who was head of engineering services in the previous mayoral committee.

The former local economic development head, Luntu Bobo, will now head engineering; his replacement in local economic development is newcomer Valerie Viljoen. She will be responsible for the development of small businesses, tourism and the rural areas around the city.

Sithembiso Tyilo, the former head of development planning, will now head the new housing portfolio; African National Congress Women's League regional secretary Nomhizana Sityi will take over the planning portfolio. Former Amathole District Municipality mayoral committee member Mankomo Pango will head the City's biggest directorate, social services.

Andile Ntoni from Dimbaza will be responsible for ensuring that the City gets closer to its communities as head of the new community participation portfolio.
