Dimbaza gets
its own municipal depot

17 February 2006

MUNICIPAL services were brought closer to the community of Dimbaza when a municipal depot was opened in the township on Friday, February 17.

Dimbaza residents ignored the wet weather to be part of the celebrations for the opening. They will be able to have their queries regarding service delivery answered at the depot. The City's general manager for community services, Graeme Smith, said it would have representatives from all the community-related services provided by the municipality.

"In this depot we have waste management, staff dealing with environmental services and staff from the amenities department. People will be able to receive information about a whole host of services provided by the City," he said.

Some of the services people would be able to get access to included booking and information about cemeteries, sports fields and waste removal.

However, the depot was not the only new addition for the people of Dimbaza - the City also upgraded the community gymnasium, the sports field, a netball court and cricket nets. "We have also refurbished the Dimbaza fire station so that the area can receive efficient service in case of fire and other life-threatening situations," Smith explained.

Before the refurbishment of the fire station, the city had to use fire engines from King William's Town, about 25 kilometres from Dimbaza, in emergencies.

Executive Mayor Sindisile Maclean said he was happy that the community of Dimbaza would have its own facilities. "The opening of this multi-purpose depot is a result of the listening campaigns we held last year. This is one of the things you wanted for your community. We are now bringing local government closer to the people."

He said the completion of the projects proved the City's commitment to serving the people in the municipal area. "By providing these services we want to bring Dimbaza to its former glory and make its people feel appreciated by the City.

"The opening of the depot and the refurbishment of the other facilities should be celebrated by the people of the community," Maclean said.

He urged the community to take ownership of the facilities and use the City's various staff to learn more about services provided by the municipality.
