Drivers urged to
collect licences

21 October 2005

THOUSANDS of people could be driving around without licences. According to Buffalo City's senior communications manager, Mamnkeli Ngam, there are about 5 000 uncollected drivers' licences at the City's traffic department offices.

Residents have been urged to collect their licences at the department offices in Gonubie and Braelyn. "We are making a call on motorists who have made applications for drivers' licences and have not collected them, to come forward as soon as possible," Ngam said.

When collecting their licences, applicants should bring their identity documents and old driving licences, Ngam said, adding that by law the municipality was required to destroy all unclaimed licences after 90 days.

Drivers are also advised to apply early for their new licences to avoid unnecessary delays. "The card manufacturer in Pretoria has a shutdown period over Christmas, so people need to make their applications early."

Buffalo City is also concerned about outstanding traffic fines and the traffic department has about 25 000 unsettled warrants of arrest. "The City's traffic services are out in full force, arresting traffic offenders in their homes, work places and on the roads," Ngam warned.

Offenders are taken to a police station or to the magistrate's court to pay their fines. If an offender is arrested after hours, they are locked up overnight.

Motorists can check if they have outstanding fines or warrants of arrest, and make arrangements to pay, by phoning 043 705 9340.
