EL museum gets SA Games logo
30 March 2004
The logo for the 2nd South Africa Games held in the city recently was handed over to the East London Museum on Tuesday.
Designer Hastings Mqhayi said it took him four days to design the logo which was emblazoned on plates, T-shirts and street lights, the Daily Dispatch reported.
"Initially I presented three logos, which were rejected, but this one was accepted," he told the newspaper.
According to Mqhayi the logo represented the spirit of the games and also reflected the buffalo, which the city is named after. "I had to hand the logo over as I could not keep it and I find the museum a suitable place to keep it for generations to come," Mqhayi said
Museum director Mcebisi Magadla said historians were trying to make a documentary of the entire event and Mqhayi's gesture was useful. He said the museum intended exhibiting artefacts used during the event.
Historian Zuko Blauw said the museum was hoping for posters and appreciated having the artist's original work. Both Blauw and Magadla assured Mqhayi his work would be kept safely.
