Workers clear Gwentshe's gravesite

9 February 2004

BUFFALO City Municipality workers have cleared the Gompo graveyard where ANC Youth league founder Alcott Gwentshe is buried, the Daily Dispatch reported.

Gwentshe, who died in 1966, is one of four people who will be honoured by Buffalo City when they receive the Freedom of the City honour on Saturday.

Matthew Moonieya, special advisor to the mayor, told the newspaper that discussions were being held about the site.

"The mayoral committee portfolio leader on social services, Fudukile Mbovane, and stakeholders are discussing the restoration of this historic site. There is a possibility that a garden of remembrance could be built to recognise it as such," Moonieya said.
