Education department
pays R2m debt

10 February 2004

THE Eastern Cape Education Department has settled its debt of almost R2-million in service arrears owed to the Buffalo City Municipality, according to a report in the Daily Dispatch.

The city's Chief Financial Officer Brian Shepherd told newspaper that the department had paid its debt in full. "We congratulate them for doing so and appointing someone to manage their accounts," he said.

In January, the department had appealed for time to prepare payments following threats that power to its administration offices would be cut. Education officials claimed at the time that they would be unable to process payments if the power supply was cut.
