Gloves on as city
fights vandalism
4 September 2003
Buffalo City will spend R170 000 on its anti-vandalism campaign, the Daily Dispatch reported today.
The campaign is aimed at discouraging citizens from vandalising community facilities, equipment and environments.
Corporate Services director Amanda Mangwentshu said in a report that the municipality had to ensure that the citizens of Buffalo City buy into the campaign in order for it to succeed.
"It is necessary to create the awareness that public facilities actually belong to them and that damaging these facilities impacts negatively on them," Magwentshu said.
Magwentshu said the municipality was considering using an icon or mascot to make the anti-vandalism campaign more approachable and acceptable, the newspaper reported.
"Besides its educational value, the mascot or icon has the potential to promote and enhance the corporate image and identity of the organisation," Magwentshu said.
