Council gets tough
on illegal electricity
31 July 2003
Illegal electricity connections are costing Buffalo City millions of rands, and the municipality intends to tackle the problem as a matter of urgency.
The municipality planned to establish a division to deal with residents who made such illegal connections, the Daily Dispatch reported today.
The council decided, as a matter of urgency, to establish a revenue protection division, the newspaper said.
Municipal engineering director Hamish Forrest told the Daily Dispatch his department planned to carry out a series of raids on illegal wiring because it was concerned about the loss of revenue to the city. The safety hazard to residents was also a concern.
Despite the raids, some residents reconnected the wiring as soon as the electricity teams had left the area, Forrest added.
