Opposition to the proposed R6-billion superhighway linking Durban and East London is growing, with Durban city manager Mike Sutcliffe saying the toll road is unlikely to get the thumbs up from government, Business Day reported today.

If the project is canned, it will be the second time government has dropped its plans for a toll road in the area, according to the newspaper.

The first project was ditched in 1997 after it emerged that the toll road was economically unviable, the same reason Sutcliffe has raised in his opposition to the new proposal.

"This is not an initiative by government, it was an unsolicited bid from the Wild Coast toll consortium. It is highly unlikely that the toll road, in its present form, will go ahead as there still needs to be more investigation into the route," Sutcliffe told Business Day.
