In an effort to improve its image, the East London suburb of Southernwood yesterday showed its caring side by holding a Christmas braai at St James' Park for local youngsters and the homeless.
The braai was the initiative of two local residents, Cynthia Genu and Thembile Linda, who decided to "do something positive for the community".
Last week Buffalo City Executive Mayor Sindisile Maclean, in an address to city police on plans to get tough on crime during the holiday season, singled out as places to watch the Quigney and Southernwood, "where shebeens are promoting unruly behaviour and criminals believe they can have a field day".
By holding the Christmas braai at the local public park, Ms Genu and Mr Linda decided to try and change that perception of the neighbourhood. "We would like to show people we care about our youngsters, and would like to see them succeed at whatever they set out to do," said Ms Genu.
In order for Southernwood residents to build a sense of community spirit they needed to help the helpless and in so doing eliminate crime, Ms Genu said. "If we keep the youth busy with projects, they will not have time to commit crime and go to these sheebens. They will be too busy empowering themselves and the community."
Mr Linda added that it was time communities stopped waiting for political leaders to give them assistance and should rather become involved with building self-sufficient communities. "We will encourage the people here today to undertake work programmes so they can earn money. We will also encourage the youngsters to be involved in community building activities."
The community also planned to reintroduced beauty pageants, sports activities and community gatherings to bring the Southernwood community together. "We need to do things in unison. We also want to blot out the perception that Southernwood is a crime haven," said Mr Linda.
He urged the municipality to include local residents in community-building projects. "We want to be included. We can advise when necessary."
