Buffalo City Municipality has beefed up security at its libraries to combat book theft that is costing the municipality about R250 000 a year, the Daily Dispatch reported today.
Social Service director Peter King told the newspaper that if book theft was not stopped, the community - especially students - would not be able to benefit from using the resources.
"There are security systems in place at the Central Library and at newer libraries such as Gompo and Mdantsane, Braelyn and Extension 10," King told the newspaper.
The municipality has budgeted more than R1, 5-million to update library resources and replace stolen books.
