Department of Health Services
This department forms part of the
Directorate of Health and Public Safety. The purpose of this department is to provide primary health care and an auxiliary health care service that is both preventative and curative. These services, together with an environmental health management programme, ensure the health and safety of all communities within Buffalo City.
The department comprises three divisions:
- Nursing services;
- Health support services; and
- Environmental health services.
Nursing services
The 28 clinics and four mobile clinics provide a primary health care service to about 250,000 people.

Health support services
This division is made up of:
ATICC - Aids Training ,Information and Counselling Centre;
Pharmacy; and
Health Promotion.
Medical Services.
Environmental health services
This division addresses problems that include:
- food safety;
- infectious disease control;
- industrial pollutants;
- noise pollution;
- pest control;
- keeping of animals in populated areas;
- slaughtering animals for ritual purposes; and
- the safety of educare facilities.
